I have a new “friend.” For the sake of this blog, its name is the “Blob.” He’s been with me for a while now, but I was just formally introduced to him when his picture appeared on an MRI Sunday night.
I have been getting goofy over the last couple years. Unexplained stuff, I could only explain by getting older: aches, pains, ringing in the ears and other assorted stuff that generally goes along with being over 40, as I am (first element of humor). Recently, it’s gotten worse. Add numb hands, feet and dropping stuff to the list of annoyances.
While shopping at the grocery store Sunday night I ran into a doctor friend, who asked me how I was doing. When I answered, no words came out. He got the picture. That conversation (or lack-thereof) led to a trip to an ICU (where I now have a super-secret pseudonym and password). That’s where I first met the “Blob.”
He’s plum-sized on the left frontal lobe. Poetic justice being what it is, this is the area of my brain that controls speech. So my new job may be as an ASL translator for important people, such as the popular band, Nickelback (second element of humor). But we’ll discuss job opportunities after I get this damn thing out of my head. That happens Thursday. They say it’ll take 5 hours. I work the night shift, so I see this as a nice little nap. When I wake up, we should know if it’s a good, bad or another type of “Blob” and what comes next.
Since we don’t know that stuff, it might be a good time to talk about all the possibilities. We’ve learned my doctor is the best there is. Listed as one of Oprah’s “Miracle Men” and has several 5-star yelp reviews. My buddy, Paul Ecke, stopped by and brought up a complication we hadn’t considered: my political leanings may change and I may wake up yelling “drill baby drill!” or finding wisdom in what Sarah Palin has to say. The point here is we’re entering territory about which I know little. Having my family and friends around me for the past two days has confirmed that my strength will come from humor—not worry.
Please think of me and the “blob” in happy terms, and as Paul also said “I’ll see you on the other side.” I’m pretty sure he meant the other side of the weekend.
Loren

Cannot wait to hear your story after the Blob is gone and you can share with us! LOTS of prayers for your doctors and nurses to take good care of you – keep your sense of humor going, it is greatly needed in a hospital setting for patients and workers both! You are one of our favorite news people in San Diego….good luck Loren!
Loren, along with all your other friends and fans out there, Stan and I send our positive thoughts and prayers your way. You will certainly conquer the BLOB!
So you got your head examined and they actually found something! Damn, some people will go to any links to get out of going to work! You’ll milk this one for a while! Drill the bastard out…Enjoy the pain meds (Get extras for a rainy day!) and think about the cool stories you can tell showing your cool new scar off…Chicks dig scars. Golden light heading your way…Enjoy the nap.
Love you Uncle! Sending lots of prayers your way… I’m sure next time I come to visit you will be your old goffy self – no doubt!
Loren …. You’re so amazing …. dealing with this with your normal great sense of humor. You’re in our thoughts and prayers. Guess we’d better say a word or two for the Blob. He doesn’t have a chance!
Loren, we don’t know one another, but have a mutual friend in Cheri Rouse. I read her FB entry about your tumor. I had a benign meningioma (brain tumor) removed in 1995. Lost my sense of taste and smell because of it, but if that’s the worse that could come out of it, no biggie! My life is now defined as “before brain tumor” and “after brain tumor.” Take it one day at a time, and keep going with your sense of humor. It’s what got me through it!
Your courage and determination, positive thinking and the best in medicine-it’s all in your favor. Add good wishes, and the prayers of thousands of friends and fans. No contest, you win, tumor loses.
Loren Dear,
Chester and I have been away from the public since David and his little friends have been doing so well over at the Channel 8 Radio station. You were so kind to ask us to be friends with you on Facebook when Bring Back the DSC was running and we enjoyed your comments so (I noticed though that you never invited us over for supper, but I’m sure with your very busy television schedule that just wasn’t do able) But I just had to come by upon hearing the news of your little visitor, and tell you that both the ol’ Coot and I (that’s my name for Chester, dear, what were you thinking?) have you in our thoughts daily, and are pulling for you. I know it is frightening to have the blob inside your noggin, but take it from me, people with the best attitudes survive! I guess Chester would be an exception to that rule, but nonetheless we are counting on you to cast the blob away like a week-old hot-dish from the Ladies Auxilary up here at Lawrence Welks Village in North Counteeeee. When you are up to it, I’ll get Chester to fire up the Nash and we’ll drop off some bar cookies to cheer you up!
Ta Ta for now Dear! HMMM hmmm HMMMM hmmm….
Sincerely,
Aunt Edna
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you say goodbye to the “blob”. Wish you best of health!

Loren,
Wow buddy … now all your neighborly behaviors make sense!;) jk. Just wanted to wish you the best! Having spent far to many years studying the brain, I’m definitely interested to chat with you more. Kind of amazing that I’m guessing you will be awake to experience the blob removal too! The brain is an interesting organ and clearly you have all the down low from the neurosurgeons. I think there is a Confucius saying somewhere that says: always make sure your neurosurgeon has a steady hand.
lots of love and encouragement,
Soren
Trusting God to bless you and your dear family with strength to endure and His love to comfort and heal you.
Loran, Had fun working with you years age at the Oside FD Rodeo… wish you the best…Beat the Blob!

Loren, I had the pleasant opportunity to meet you and your wife when I groomed your dogs a few years back. You greeted me at your door with a sweet bird on your shoulder, a picture I remember when I see you or think of you. I am sending you my most powerful, healing thoughts!! Go get em!
I feel like you are apart of my family having had you in my home for so many years. Your personality and attitude is the reason we love bringing you into our home. God bless you and may he give you and your body strength, strength as they drill drill drill. I have faith your going to be great. Prayers 🙂
We will be keeping our fingers crossed for you. The news cast won’t be the same without you. One of the reasons we love you is due to the way you handle things in life. I remember an article about you a few years ago, in the UT, before you got the job at Fox. You keep things in perspective and have never lost your humor. We know you’ll do well. Positive thoughts always help and God knows you have that. We’ll look forward to seeing you back at 10. Take care.
Super excited to see more of this kind of stuff online.
Loren – Lots of prayers and good wishes coming your way. You are one of the nicest guys – Blob just needs to go away!
HI Loren, Knowing the power of a shared dream believed in, I shared my dream for you to make a comeback better than ever on my dream board.
“There is a beautiful man in our community who has taught us all to care for our surroundings, stay “green” and love one another. His name is Loren Nancarrow. Dreamers, please see Loren in better health than before. When we dream together and believe, there is no better medicine on the planet. ♥”
Here’s to being Better, Stronger, Faster….
I’ll say a prayer for you, Loren.
I went through brain surgery at the beginning of October, and I’m so grateful that I could have it done. I have been very fortunate, and things have turned out for the better. I so dearly hope that things go at least as well for you as they have for me. My thoughts are and will be with you.
I’m pullin’ for you Loren. Toss Blob in the compost bin when you’re done!
You have love, prayer and amazing doctors on your side – certainly the A-team. I am betting on you…….. The Blob is going DOWN!!!
Loren,
You’ve been such a great influence on my life. Your books are fantastic, I reccomend them to everyone I know. Looking forward to the next one. Beat the blob!

Loren, I’m an old retire SDFD firefighter who you pissed off 20+ years ago because of a couple of what I felt were slanted stories about the dept. Today, I am praying for nothing but the best outcome for you and blessings and love for your family. Having several members of my family afflicted with cancer, I know the journey is hard but the battle is winnable (is that a word)
Best wishes, Loren Nancarrow! You are one of my favorites!
Heartfelt prayers for the highest good during your surgery. With love,
