For more than 30 years, Loren Nancarrow educated and enlightened San Diego T.V. viewers with his vast knowledge of Earth and its climate on ABC 10 News, CBS 8 News and Fox 5 News. Loren was an outspoken conservationist and environmentalist who was not afraid to air his (sometimes controversial) opinions about our planet. As a weatherman, anchor and reporter, Loren was a 5-time Emmy winner and 4-time Golden Mic winner. Nancarrow was also the co-author of 4 organic gardening books with Random House.
Loren lived in San Diego’s North County with his wife, Susie, the owner of Nancarrow Realty Group in North County, and their pets. They have three kids Graham (25), Hannah (24) and Britta (20).
Loren was diagnosed with stage III terminal brain cancer (Anaplastic Astrocytoma) in early February of 2013. He retired from his position as anchor on the Fox 5 evening news and he and his daughter, Hannah, co-authored this blog as a way of sharing his journey with thousands of friends and supporters.
After a courageous 11 month battle, Loren passed away on December 28, 2013. He is incredibly missed. You can read his obituary here.

Mr. Nancarrow, ever since I heard about your condition I’ve been trying to remember the details of an article I read not too long ago about a Greek man a few decades ago who, having been diagnosed with terminai cancer here in America, went back to his home island in Greece to spend his remaining days, ate the food there, and wound up curing himself naturally with the diet there and living many more decades until this very day (and outliving the American doctors who’d diagnosed him!). After googling the name of that island, I found out the name: Ikaria. As for the food I am not certain. I believe the article mentioned “powerful, cancer-killing green foods,” but can’t remember the name. Actually, the site I just read now about that Greek man/Ikaria mentioned a number aspects of that diet, plus some social cultural aspects as well. Just a quick note to you. I have a benign brain tumor. I read everything I could get my hands on researching this foreign thing called a “meningioma.” When I read about you, I thought of a book I read that you and your wife might find helpful. It is called “The Power of Two” written by Brian & Gerri Monaghan. Brian Monaghan was a well-known trial lawyer here in San Diego who has had brain cancer for the past 13 years or so. The books tells about all their research and everything they have done to beat this beast. The good news is he is still beating it 🙂
Thanks for all the years of great broadcasting. We discovered last April that my then 38-year-old daughter had frontal oligodendroglioma…they opened her up, declared it inoperable and we were given the ‘make final arrangements’ speech. But we contacted Moores…in a second surgery, Dr. Chen removed the tumor, she recently completed several months of radiation and chemotherapy and is now on monthly chemotherapy under the care of Drs. Piccioni and Kesari. Even though a stroke accompanied the original surgery, she fought her way back and is doing well. The only lasting effect is diminished eyesight. She recently was able to go back to work at the Library at a local high school. We are all in this fight together. Sending out prayers and positive thoughts to you and everyone else who needs them.

My husband, Allen was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (stage 4) brain cancer in May of 2011. He just had his 5th resection, brain surgery last Friday. He is under the care of Dr. Kesari and Dr. Piccioni at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center.
I’m reaching out to you not only because our family has been going through this terrible disease, but have watched close friends suffer from it too (people met in the brain tumor foundation and by coincidence). I am firm believer that one of the reasons Allen has beat the prognosis so far is because of the advocacy and research I (and family) have done. His quality of life is definitely deminishing, but I have not given up hope. Allen was the first patient on quite a few trials at UCSD, such as ICT107 and Tocagen. In fact he was interviewed by Bloomberg news for Tocagen because at first he had positive results.
It is so important to have Caris and Foundation One test your tumor tissue for genetic profiling (if you have surgery). They can help lead a path to what possibly is the best chemo/ medication depending on your tumors genetic make-up.

Hi Loren, I hate to see people die prematurely because of ignorance. It amazes me that the news is not sreading the cure for cancer. Are you working for the medical association or the drug companies? PLease dont. The internet site searches such as The Rick Simpson Cure, hemp cures,and marajuana cures cancer shows 2 brain cancers cured in children, prostate cancer and certain skin cancers cured and normalizes diabetic insulin levels. Sorry, but this information only comes from testimonial of scientist,chemist and loving people.Get well soon. Spread the cure.
Cancer is completely curable, 100%. Using diet alone. I know from first hand experience. The chemo, the radiation, and the surgery is what kills the person. Loren, My husband and I are both cancer survivors. My husband had a reucrrence of prostate cancer 7 years after surgery to remove the prostate. He was fortunate to have found the proton therapy center at Loma Linda for treatment. it was a lifesaving and wonderful experience for him. Proton therapy is highly targeted radiation treatment that focuses on the area of the cancer, goes in and stops there without exposing the surrounding tissue. It;s purpose is to limit damage to areas outside of the cancer. His PSA counts have been in the zeros since then, which was about 7 years ago.
I know that Dr. Rossi , who was his doctor, is now heading up the proton therapy center at Scripps. I would definitely reccomend a second opinion by him for radiation treatment vs surgery.

Dear Loren, I just read in this mornings UT article what is happening with you and why I haven’t seen you on the tele in your anchor spot. (I’m 91 years old and at that jumping off place so I wouldn’t have even known to try and look you up on the internet. My daughter is writing this for me. I don’t have a clue as to what blogging even is!) You have been my gardening guru for many years. I come from a long line of organic farmers so unbeknownst to you, you have been my friend for many, many years! In fact, my daughter took me to Anderson’s of Leucadia a few years back on my birthday and found you wondering around. She brought you to me as I get around these days with a walker with its own seat and was seated, admiring some interesting succulents at that moment. What a wonderful surprise it was to get to meet you! My bucket list has gotten shorter these days, as I continue to push out my expiration date. And now, for you to decide to share with us your very ” personal journey”, well that, I think that is pretty amazing too.
It was 1980, I was 17 and lived in Encinitas. My friends used to think I was weird because I always wanted to watch the news and this was the era of MTV. What would they have thought if I told them I read the Newspaper too.( Remember the old days, before the computer)? A lot of my friends had no idea what was really going on outside their bubble.
So I am 50 years old now and I never stopped watching the news. And to be fair, I watch both Channel 10 and Channel 8 every night.( I loved it when they came out with the DVR) To me you have always been like a “Local” that I see everyday. I remember thinking that the older reporter’s must finally be retiring, because they were finally being replaced with younger people.
I have watched you evolve as a reporter over the years, always did like your style.of reporting.And I kinda felt like I grew up with you over the years..In my 20,s, before you were married my friends and I would see you and Micheal Tuck down on
” Restaurant Row” in Cardiff or “The Wrinkle Room” ( The Del Mar Cafe). Thats what we called it.
Then you married Susie, who was one of the nicest girl’s that I went to San Dieguito High School with.. I was so happy to hear that. Not sure when you switched to Channel 8,but I have watched you do so much for San Diego over the years with your great reporting, humor and then the wisdom over the years started being shared. I think I’ve only told Bob (my husband) a frioatcn of what went on there. So much happened. So many great memories and the work, AYEEE! Great work, great focused work. Like I told Kris, if I could’ve started another 15 days right after, I would have. I did manage to tell Bob that even though we were getting on average 4 hours of sleep a night, the instructors were reading all of our work. It’s daunting really how much work you guys did for us. Safety Group Blows Lid on ‘Secret Virus’ Hidden in GMO Crops

Yet another disturbing reason has emerged as to why you should be avoiding health-devastating genetically modified organisms, and it may be one of the most concerning yet. We know that GMO consumption has been linked to a host of serious conditions, but one thing we are not so sure about is the recent discovery of a hidden viral gene deep within genetically modified crops.
For years, GMOs have been consumed knowingly and unknowingly around the globe, with Monsanto and the United States government claiming that the altered franken crops are perfectly safe despite very limited (or virtually none in some cases) initial testing and scientists speaking out against the dangers. One such danger that has actually not been spoken about has been revealed in a recent report by a safety watchdog group known as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
In the EFSA report, which can be read online, you can find (within the scientific wording) that researchers discovered a previously unknown viral gene that is known as ‘Gene VI’. What’s concerning is that not only is the rogue gene found in the most prominent GMO crops and about 63% of GMO traits approved for use (54 out of 86 to be precise), but it can actually disrupt the very biological functions within living organisms. Popular GMO crops such as Roundup-Ready soybeans, NK603, and MON810 corn were found to contain the gene that induces physical mutations. NK603 maize, of course, was also recently linked to the development of mass tumors in rats.
According to Independent Science News, Gene VI also inhibits RNA silencing. As you may know, RNA silencing has been pinpointed as vital for the proper functioning of gene expression when it comes to RNA. Perhaps more topically, it is a defense mechanism against viruses in plants and animals alike. On the contrary, many viruses have developed genes that disable this protective process. Independent Science News reports that the Gene VI is one such gene.
Overall, there is a degree of knowledge on Gene VI. What we do know going by information within the report is that the gene:
Helps to assemble virus particles
Inhibits the natural defense of the cellular system
Produces proteins that are potentially problematic
Makes plants susceptible to bacterial pathogens
All of which are very significant effects that should be studied in depth by an independent team of scientists after GMO products are taken off the market pending further research on the entire array of associated diseases. And that does not even include the effects we are unaware of.

Just a bit a encouragement about cancer…
1) I had Renal Cell carcinoma and prostate cancer at the same time. Given an 8% survival estimate I was told to prepare for a protracted hospital stay. Surgeries and treatments and 5 years later I am 100% cancer free.
2) My brother in law had stage 4 esophageal cancer (2% survival rate), 9 years later he surfs every day.
Neither of us was ready to go. Every time you hear your mental/emotional attitude
makes a difference BELIEVE IT!
Survival happens.

Ditto what Connie just said! Connie and the gang at The San Diego Brain Tumor Foundation has been invaluable for our family when my husband reluctantly joined the tumor club. He developed his own ways of staying focused and coping with all of the steps in treatment and living life, but he also got a lot out of the insights, tips and “tricks of the trade” that other folks shared. I, the wife-turned-caregiver (fondly referred to as “Nurse Ratchett”) probably got even more from the group in terms of just good old support from people who understand in a way that even our dear friends and family couldn’t. Our kids felt better knowing that Mom and Dad had amazing back up during such a hairy time. We hope you and your family stay calm and strong, and keep reaching out to your “peeps”!
