There are 35 potted plants on my front porch. They came from my coworkers at Fox 5. Apparently, after 3 decades they’ve noticed how much I like to lecture people about plants. As long as we’re on the subject, don’t throw away those “meat diapers” that sit under uncooked meat. Instead, soak them in a glass of water, the remaining red liquid (really it’s just bloody water) makes for an amazing organic nitrogen fertilizer for plants.
So, back to my work buddies…and the 35 potted plants I’m now tasked with caring for. Gee, thanks guys! The truth is I’ve worked with some amazing people in this town starting at Channel 8 in 1980, 10 News in ’98 and for the last few years at Fox 5. In their profession they see the worst society has to offer—yet they are genuinely empathetic and optimistic despite it all. They are the off-hour warriors. Some get up in the middle of the night and chase down the stories that will become your morning headlines. Others leave for work just as their kids are getting home from school. They’re writers, artists and downright photographic geniuses. They have their fingers perpetually monitoring San Diego’s pulse and I’m lucky to have them as my very best friends.
So, I’ll water the plants, arrange them just so and smile knowing they’re better off in my hands than in theirs.
Miss you guys.
Loren
Hi,
Have you ever been here before? You’ve got to visit this great place, take a look at that
Yours, Eileen Brennan
Excellent post. I used to be checking constantly this weblog and I am inspired! Extremely useful information specifically the ultimate section 🙂 I take care of such information a lot. I used to be seeking this particular information for a long time. Thanks and good luck.
Love your gardening & plant tips. Great idea on the meat diapers! You look smashing in blue :-). Jeanette
Hi Loren, Am shocked to read about the brain cancer this morning. Had no idea. Will add to Janice’s prayer list for you to get well. Great to have all those flowers, they are very uplifting. I still use and have passed on your Christmas tree recipe from years ago. Now comes the meat diaper one. Thanks. Will give it a try and think of you.
All the best to you, and enjoy the camping with your family.
Helga Buehner (old friend of Bob Mills)
Hey Loren and Susie,
Bill Gish and Andra are sending their love and support, Loren, We love your “kick ass” or in this case, “kick cancer” attitude, Enjoy your travels!
We have a small prayer wheel of friends who have been very successful with their diligent prayers. I know. Both my husband and I had cancer this last year and for the time being we are “in remission”. We will add you to our prayer list. I believe that every little bit helps. Best of luck Loren.
Love the comment about the meat diapers!! Typical advice from you. Looking forward to hearing more of your great advice. Looking forward to your return to the news. San Diego’s environment needs your advocacy.
We tried to have flowers delivered to you at the hospital but they called me later to say you had been discharged. I told them I knew that wasn’t true because you happened to be in brain surgery at that time… It turns out you are such a CELEB that they had to keep your name off the list or gave you another name!Anyway they donated to another patient who didn’t get any flowers, so that’s good!! 🙂
we love you Cath!
35 potted plants and the most beautiful of them all is there in the middle with the gray cap on. Good therapy for you. Take care, friend
Hi Loren: Look at you with your cap and scarf and blue fingernails. There’s got to be some modeling agency looking to call you. Check the Reader for an ad: “Mature outdoor type male model needed for next month’s issue of a landscape magazine; nail polish okay. Clean cut need not apply!” Just keep the cap on, they won’t ask why you’ve got a hole in your head!!!
Loren: Beautiful plants and a good tip about the “meat diapers”. Thanks. Ferne and I have watched you and enjoyed your part of the newscast since we moved here from Minneapolis in 1993. Good luck on your recovery. We’re rooting for you!!
Best,
Al Mork ( and Ferne Gaarder )

Spring is in the air!!!! FINALLY! Hope your spring with burst out as colorful as your porch ❤
This is the coolest gift EVER! Beyond being apropos, it will keep you occupied during your recovery and aid in your physical therapy as I’m sure many will need to be planted too. And you’re right, those babies are much better off in your hands than theirs. 🙂
BTW… I need a gardener if you’re looking for more therapy!
Loren, you are too much!! You always have good things to tell us about & make us laugh!! I love the moveable garden at your door! You’ll make it beautiful- just as you are!!
Sally B.
Love your words Loren . Those plants are lucky as we are to know you.
Hey, Loren anytime you need some gardening labor just shout out to me. Now that I moved to a little condo, I don’t have the same landscaping requirements as I did in the old case. I did plant my new cobalt blue planters this weekend cut up my hands and thought of fun and good things in your near future!
these will keeep you busy
Love! Love! Love! So much love, Loren! Seek and ye shall find. Knock and the door will be open. Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.
Peace of The Lord be with you and bless you and keep you safe!
