I had the greatest idea for my next blog post while I was in the shower this morning. Trouble is—I forgot what it was. That’s one of the new things that I’m experiencing. My short term memory is being zapped by the radiation. I think I set out to write about the way cancer therapy kicks a person’s @$$—and the fact that I was hiding from the side effects. I’ve begun distancing myself from friends and coworkers out of fear of being seen while I’m not at my best. By not at my best—I mean my words are slurred and my hair is falling out (no seriously it is).
Recently, I’d started adding audio to my blog. But with the last 2 posts—I avoided that. I used the excuse that I was too tired, too busy or too [insert cancer excuse here]. But the truth is—I had lost confidence in my voice. My particular tumor was on the left frontal lobe which controls the right side of my body and my speech. I now have very limited use of my right hand—I dropped a watermelon at Seaside Market today for example (shout out to the guys who had to clean it up). Â And as I continue with radiation, some of my good brain cells (near the evil ones) are caught in the crossfire. Long story short—my speech is on a downhill slide.
We set out to make this blog an honest look at one family’s journey. So, today I’m gonna try again. The changes in my voice will be subtle—but they’re there—and hopefully temporary. So don’t judge me too harshly when you listen to today’s audio version.
Oh now I remember that blog idea I had in the shower this morning! Did you read the Union Tribune article this weekend about the Ramona couple busted for growing medicinal marijuana?! I guess I’ll save that for my next post. Remind me if I forget.

It’s the way of your expression towards the writer. Most people these days use it as a back linking process.

I’ve only posted once before and I’m not sure if it took or not. But I am going to write again because I want to say hello. I just think you’re the cat’s meow, whatever that means. But it’s supposed to mean the very best! So I am writing today because I just hosed off the aphids on my new delicate rose buds. What a coincidence that’s what you are sharing today. Those nasty old aphids try to get my roses every year but I try to stay ahead of them. I have some pretty roses such as, Honor, Golden Midas, Double Delight, Lady Diana, Brigadoon, Secret, About Face, Las Vegas, Betty Boop, Silvarado and a few others whose names are unknown to me. I have lived in my house for nearly 47 years. I have always loved gardening. I have different gardens in my yard; 5 succulent gardens, 1 shade garden, 1 tropical garden, fruit trees such as bananas, Papaya, Pomegranate, apple, Black Fig, avacados, and another one that I can’t remember the name of right now. I think this memory is called a brain toot :). So you see, I have many types of plants and because of you, I have earned how to care for many of them. I love your sweet personality. You make gardening fun for me and of course, others. So, just so you know, I think of you often and I hope you feel better soon. Janie Kein
I thought I’d learned quite a bit about hope, strength and courage from my mother and sister, before they passed away from brain cancer in late 2011 and last June, respectively.
You’ve taken that schooling to a whole new level, Loren.

Dear Loren, as I have gone through way too many brain tumors than I care to admit with my friends….my heart aches even more each time I hear the pain of another friend going through it…it brings all the struggles back to mind. Currently I have two friends battling this battle. I just hate brain tumors. At the same time I realize it is life and life brings many gifts. One of those gifts is kindness…I am sure you have felt a lot of that lately. You know why? At some point you have given that to all of us. From talking to you on the beach….to pitching work ideas…to living by your asthma cure of watering the flowers to feel better tip, you have been a part of my life and that of my family. You have touched so many of us…so we all hope you feel our wings around you. We love your voice. I pray for you and your family. I pray you will pick up “How to Outsmart Cancer.” It is my bible on remaining cancer free. Your words are good therapy for us all. I moved away from San Diego some years ago but still have deep roots in the community. A friend shared your journey with me as she knows you were always one of my favorite newscasters! Know that you’ve so many from so far and wide who are keeping you close in thought and prayer. Your spirit and energy on your voice blog is strong and bright. And your wonderful approach to your fight is hopeful, humorous and enlightening. I am sorry you are going through the evil cancer thing but your strength and great attitude are increidble. For years I have watched you and thought what an amazing man you are. i find your blog light hearted yet intense at the same time. it helps me to live in the present and appreciate all that i have every day while at the same time reminding me to laugh at the stuff that many of us take way too seriously.

Just found your blog. I saw the UT article awhile ago whcich enlightened me as to your present whereabouts. I have watched your TV personality since coming to San Diego in 1987 & always enjoyed what you had to say. Now your story takes a new turn and all your “people” travel with you down this strange and scary road by way of your marvelous voice keeping us informed. When you feel dis-courage-d think of all the good thoughts that are sent your way every day! Include mine.
Loren, I was hoping to see you and your wife last night at the Don Tolman conference in Encinitas. I told him about you and he offered to help. He will be in San Diego for two more days. He saved my friend Wil from cancer spreading. Wil had stage 4 throat cancer. He had the same head gear that you have in radiation. He endured six weeks of chemo as well. He was close to death, when we met Don Tolman. I urge you to go on his website and contact him ASAP. He can and will help you!!

I have been a big fan of yours for a long time. I watched your weather reports on channel 8 and channel 10. I also watched you on Fox as the anchor man. I have always admired your commitment to the environment and your pursuit to educate the public to live free of toxic substances, and to provide alternative ways to keep our environment free of these toxins. I appreciate you sharing this journey you and your family are now embarking on, it shows great courage. I’ve enjoyed the audio component so much, as you have a wonderful t.v./radio voice. My son was diagnosed with a brain tumor, a rare one in adults…maybe 2 in a million per year for adults (he was soooo lucky, wasn’t he)…now why couldn’t we have those odds in wining the lottery 🙂 Surgery was successful, radiation was kinda scary, and he is just about to finish his third cycle of chemo, a schedule probably going until October. He is the bravest person I know on the earth….just know that people think you are brave and courageous…side effects albeit discouraging are probably to be expected, and yes (and I never thought I would say this, ever, ever) but the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes are is amazing (he tried the prescription antinausea pills), and it doesn’t take a lot. I have seen it work miracles…hang in there, lots of prayers to you and your family.
On the upside, in the middle of any conversation you can really fake a good orgasm!
Listening to the audio, I can say you have a great voice.
Hang in there, Loren! Having experienced similar symptoms when my husband underwent radiation/chemo, I have two pieces of advice:
1) Just shave your head now – the hair will come back later
2) Train yourself to put things like eyeglasses in the same place whenever you aren’t using them; it will help you to remember where you put them.
I’m praying for your complete recovery.

One of the things I can tell you about the cancer journey is what I used to call the countdown. My niece, Devon, coined the phrase to help me “count down” the number of treatments that I had left to face…Each treatment meant one less, going forward…As for side effects, they are on count down, too! Hair will come back, (maybe more on your head! it could be curly, too!) I bet your speech gets better and your strength improves…Just remember the countdown…It won’t last forever…Hang in while we pray for you…D
My inspirations most frequently visit me in the shower. Unfortunately, most of them wash down the drain and I don’t even have a medical excuse. Just too many thoughts trying to rain on me.
I have always enjoyed listening to you, but never so much as now with your “compromised” voice. Your new brand of poignancy is the greatest gift I have received from you.

Dear Loren: it seems appropriate at this juncture (I love using this word as it reminds me I do know more than my everyday vocabulary) to say that the admission of your side effects does not scare anyone off by your telling us so. For you to see them written down or to hear them coming from your own mouth is obviously making them more real. I imagine that is scary in and of itself. It just makes you more human! So your speech is slurred, your memory is taking a break, and you’re losing what hair you have left on your head. You are still Loren! Now no forgetting that, ok?

I did not notice any issues with your voice. I can’t wait to hear about the medical cannabis article. I’m a 70+ young woman who got her medical permit and used the tincture form during my 5 week chemo/radiation treatment for lung cancer. Never got nauseated or threw up. Making cannabis illegal for medical purposes is terrible. It is a safe and effective medicinal drug. Best of luck with your treatment. Chemo/radiation wiped out 80% of the tumor and surgery three weeks ago took care of the rest of the tumor.
