The Club

The past month, since I’ve been home, has been rough. New medicines, new challenges and the constant worry as to whether I’m feeling symptoms of recovery or decline. I’m still not sure. But what I can say is the last two days I’ve been comfortable, a feeling I’ve learned not to take for granted.

There’s something else I’ve been feeling lately. It’s a feeling of inclusion, of belonging to a group of badass people fighting for their lives. Everyday I’m shocked to learn just how many of you are joining in your own battles with cancer. And although it’s not a club we choose to join, I’m inspired by my teammates. I’m inspired their energy, their drive and their reluctance to give up.

For me, walking seems easier this week, so my goal is to do more of it. Hopefully by my next post, I’ll have dropped some of the steroid weight and I’ll be able to get around more easily.

Know that as my fight continues, I’m wishing strength for you in your own personal battles with illness and all of life’s other lemons.

Loren, I admire you and your family so very much. You are all so courageous in this chapter of your lives. No one really knows how difficult the struggles are unless you have been through this. I am praying that with each new day you will be stronger and able to walk a mile or hell why not a Marathon soon…You are loved and adored!
    Hugs….
    Linda Garnica

  5. My journey with my husband is very similar to yours. The one way that it was different was that he had a hemorrhage from the tumor and that caused him to lose the ability to express himself as he might have wished. I appreciate your words in a way that they might have been the same for us. May God grant you a miracle and I pray that there is a cure for brain cancer.

  6. Kathleen says:

Back when I had a tv, you were my favorite local personality; now, you STILL are 🙂 Blue nails for you! Drink plenty of organic green juices and eat a rainbow of healthy foods; your reverence for the earth and its bounties will be repaid tenfold. Love and hugs to you and yours ❤

Loren, you have totally captured my heart. Each nite I pray for you and for your family to keep strong.
Cancer is a mean demon indeed, but it amazes me how those battling it fights back even meaner than the cancer itself.
I just lost my adopted dad to prostate cancer on Oct 5th, after 13 yrs of just keep going.
He was a Marine and even thru the radiation back in 2000 he never showed his fear nor hope.
At the end stage of watching him slowly fading away I actually remembered you and your blogs of dealing with those pesky demons. For some reason there is this look in the eyes of cancer people that no one else has. That’s a stronger love, stronger hope and stronger faith in life itself.
Loren, I know deep down you will beat against all odds. I miss seeing you next to Kathleen on Fox News and hope one day you will be back in the saddle.
    With Blessings,
    Donna Mazon

  10. Kathie says:

    Loren,
I have been in that club, twice. My brother is unfortunately heavily involved in that club right now, for the 3rd time. Maybe you will agree that facing cancer isn’t bravery when we have no other choice. But sharing your thoughts and feelings during your fight is bravery. Thank you for sharing your journey with those of us on similar journeys. Love, prayers, and hope to you and your family.

  11. Sandy Scholz says:

I love seeing your name on my email list. I save it for last to open and read. I’m one of the “bad ass” group warriors battling lung cancer. I know only too well that feeling; “is this a symptom” or just the new way of living. I have an appointment today that may tell me “it” has spread to the bones or……not. Wednesday a CT/PET scan and Friday a brain MRI. I wish my body wasn’t such a gracious host to these demons that keep coming back. I pray for this miracle called “remission.” I’ll know by the end of the week or beginning of next week. I pray for this miracle to happen to you too. Thank you for sharing your journey. May you have comfortable, tumor free days ahead…..Sandy Scholz

  12. Marilee McLean says:

You have been an environmental “hero” for me for years and now my admiration of you continues in this different arena. You and your health matter to so many people beyond those who communicate with you! Thank you for fighting so nobly toward recovery! Very sincerely, Marilee McLean Solana Beach

Thanks for the update. Sounds good, Loren. Saturday we had a chance to see another member of The Club and former member of the Waiting Room at his opening at the R.B. Stevenson Gallery in La Jolla. John looked great as did his art.
Keep walking. We’re walking with you. Walter, aka voicebox man, is doing great–no lemons lately–just lemonade, and hopes to keep his status as a “former member” of the club. Give our regards to Susie and your children.

I watched you on the news growing up over the past 20 something years, and sat next to you at Kazumi’s sushi bar numerous times. My grandpa died of brain cancer when I was a teenager and my 4 month old daughter is named Sasha, after him. He was an amazing and interesting man and inspires me still, so many years after he is gone. Following your story reminds me of everyone who has to fight this fight and the strength it takes to keep moving forward. You are a kind inspiration to those around you Loren. Glad to hear you’re feeling better this week.

She is a fighter like you and never complains…so know that we are standing behind all who face such serious health issues. May Spirit continue to guide-direct and let you know that you walk not alone but with us and 10thousand angels by your side…..hugs….

  49. You are and have always been an inspiration! You are one person I look forward to hearing a lot more from when you finally beat this thing… ❤

  50. I dreamed about you last night. We were just talking about the C word. Kind of strange to dream about a person I have only met a couple times, many years ago. Anytime I see blue nails or toes, I thank that person for thinking of you. You have united many of us San Diegans – and I’m certain will continue to do so ❤
