Where in the World is Loren Nancarrow?

Turns out I have been unclear. In my attempts to be artistic and profound, I have been vague. I haven’t really told you exactly what’s been going on in my life. The reason I haven’t been in my anchor chair for past few weeks is because I have brain cancer.

I got the diagnosis a couple weeks ago and have since been living the life of someone who has just found out they have brain cancer. My rockin’ neurosurgeon, Dr. Frank Coufal at Scripps Memorial in La Jolla, removed the large mass of it two weeks ago. I hung around ICU for about a week after that before I was released home. Since then, I have been meeting with the people who will make me all better. If you’re into the specifics of these types of things— it’s a grade 3, primary brain tumor called Anaplastic Astrocytoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer in my left frontal lobe. As a side note: that’s the area that controls speech, not optimum when you make your living as a San Diego Anchorman. Thankfully, I only lost my speech for a short while. The doctors tell me I have between 1 and 3 years to live.

So boo-hoo, poor me.

Oh yeah…I forgot to mention…I’m gonna beat this thing. Radiation starts within the next two weeks, then chemo. In addition to that chemical cocktail, I’ll be receiving treatment through the Tibetan Healing Center. I also bought a motorhome. Susie and I intend to see some of those national parks we’ve been enjoying in your Facebook photos. These will be short trips because I also plan to return to work soon…with a badass “Bond villain” scar on the side of my head.

Thank you guys for all of your support. My family has also been amazing and strong—not without times of fear and doubt, but nothing we can’t handle.

I look forward to seeing you back on Fox 5 News soon.

Loren

P.S. Here are photos of my brain before and after the surgery. Pretty cool, huh?

Dear Loren, Anyone who could teach me to coax a stubborn skunk out of our garage after several days of residence is a miracle worker in my book. You have the right attitude to begin this battle. May your treatments go smoothly and quickly and then enjoy every moment of your travels. Greg and I took a two week road trip during my breast cancer battle and it did me a world of good. It was on that trip that I discovered my most sacred and peaceful spot on earth in Monument Valley. I highly recommend it! Sending healing vibes your way.

You’re the type of guy that will beat this, Loren. Since you are looking beyond western medicine, there is another alternative that you may not be aware of. Seek out a treatment system called ‘The Gerson Therapy’. There is across the San Diego border a place called The Gerson Institute. I did some video documentary work for them in the nineties and I know many case studies in which they stalled and even reversed many different types of cancer and other physical anomalies. The treatments are fully holistic and natural. It couldn’t hurt…

Holy sniza! That was one ugly tumor. I much prefer the “after” image of your brain. Loren, you have been an inspiration to so many in the San Diego area for so long. Now you continue to inspire in a new way. I don’t know what your future holds, but I am so blown away by your spirit (and that of your family) and the legion of people you have pulling for you. I personally have been praying for you for weeks- before I even knew you had brain cancer. As it turns out you are friends with a woman in my Bible Study. You have strangers and friends praying for you, pulling for you and inspired by you. God hears those many prayers. I hate the expression, “God gives you what you can handle.” I believe God helps you handle what life gives you. Keep up the fight…and God bless you and your family.

  29. Samira's avatar Samira says:

Loren! I know you can beat this! My mother has had brain cancer since 1996 (17yrs)! She’s had 4 surgeries, 3 of them within the last 5 years and has gone through chemo, radiation and everything in between. Her recent surgery was last year and it was by far the hardest recovery with regaining movement and normalcy, but trust me she is such a fighter and you can do it too! Her doctors at UCLA are amazing. Keep your spirits high, live one day at a time and don’t forget to always believe you can beat this! Mind over matter my friend.. xx

    Hi Loren-Cowboy-Nancarrow,

You don’t know me. But I know of you and your wife….the company I work for has worked for you and Susie in the past and I have seen you anchoring up on Neptune in Leucadia and on TV many times. I also have friends that personally know you and say you’re a “great guy”.

From what I know on Facebook, I love how you live life; your helpful antidotes.

Personally, I don’t know how spiritual I am – I try…eating right, doing Yoga, taking meditative walks on the beach, but I suppose if I had some crazy-ass cells swimming around in my head, I would tell them…”go party somewhere else”….that would be my prayer, and THAT IS MY PRAYER FOR YOU. You can’t hate them but hopefully you can round ’em up and keep ’em movin’ on!!

I really think you’re going to have a lot of time to share more wisdom with us. I can’t wait to fertilize my garden with the meat-soaked packing paper and bring you and the family some veggies.

You have an awesome attitude. Thank you for sharing with all the peeps; those who are close and those who you’ve just met.

    My best, Ann

Dear Bonnie, scarf-maker from your cheerleader Marsha, here is what I have written and feel free to change any of this. Also if you would like to show Loren what body meditation is, of course feel free to do just that, otherwise if he shows interest or anyone on the site, I am happy to do that I hope you also got what Tesa wrote, feel free to pass that on.

Dear Loren, here is a very simple and clear explanation of body mediation. Your friend Bonnie known to you as Scarf Lady, has been doing body meditations with me for over a year and she wanted to share this work with you. If you would like to do a complimentary session it would be a pleasure. And if you do continue the cost is small. Looking at your page on Facebook, I can feel and see that you and your recent healing journey is a great gift to mankind, I see you as an ambassador to help us understand who we truly are and to bring that life more fully here. I do so appreciate you as does everyone else.

from Suzanne, a veteran in this lifetime of 5 years body meditation; Interesting question. I am going to answer this question in 3 parts. I call what I do body meditation. I ask them to go within and find his or her predominant physical sensation. Once this has been found and communicated to me I ask the person to keep his/her attention on the sensation until it changes. The predominant physical sensation may be an itch, a pain, an emotion, a feeling of expansion, relaxation – what ever draws ones attention. As we proceed through the session I ask the person to communicate to me when something changes. I ask him/her only to follow the energy as it moves about in the body and not manipulate it in any way. Instead of thinking about the predominant physical sensation we use the mind in a different way. The mind is used to focus on the sensation and to just pay attention and follow the energy as it changes. The masculine part of us is what focuses. As we pay attention without control the feminine part of us is free to receive whatever comes. I have always found that if I was willing to pay attention long enough to what I am feeling it will change. Generally sessions last about an hour.
First when one does body meditation the energy comes in and goes to the weakest
and tightness part of the body ( although it could be expansion instead) it is as of
we have poured even more water thru a hose and the hose is stretching and feels
tight or even hurts under this expansion. This is often a time of recovery, recovery
from many conditioned feelings in our body but also in our life. as we continue with body
meditations we go from recovery to transformation so that the hose can still feel tight or
uncomfortable but we begin to have new experiences new sensations, new understandings, and
we slowly become a new person. The subtle part of us has replaced the dense here on
earth. In other words heaven now walks the earth. We do not go off into bliss or ecstasy
but bliss and ecstasy has found us and we now have a new center of gravity and understanding and new
and deepening appreciation and connection with life. It is nameless. We are unencumbered action. we become connected to that deathless place within all of us. We never were separated after all.
one PREMISE IN IS ” The power of right action for ourselves is so that our
life may have heaven and we know it, opening to freedom by knowing truth, feeling truth, engaging truth
becoming truth, truth is becoming more life, friction free without suffering, without paying the price.
In terms of colors, not unlike chakra colors, the color frequencies of our univerwe..
The power (red) of right action (orange) for ourselves (yellow) is so that our
life (green) may have heaven (blue) and we know it (white) , opening (gold) to freedom (clear) by knowing truth (silver), feeling truth (purple), engaging truth (pink)
becoming truth (violet), truth is becoming more life, friction free without suffering, without paying the price
Over time body meditations may include meditations on appropriate colors or thoughts for breaking up frozen energies. By paying attention to what comes to our attention our bodies slowly become enlivened with living energy as old frozen ideas and parts of the body become fluid and we become more than we were before and can receive more than we knew and had before. Life becomes rich and even more intimate.

    2. The idea behind this is that life or God or that larger part of us
is always trying to bring about the next best thing. Not only for us
but for all of life. I choose to use the term life rather than God
because I feel there is so much baggage around the term God – so many
different beliefs and ideas. I can not figure out with my finite mind
what is needed for my next level of growth and healing to take place.
But there is something that does know. When we pay attention and
focus our awareness, (our attention) on the predominant physical sensation without
control we are allowing life to bring about the next best thing. We stop trying to figure things out although knowing and insight does happen. In
this form of meditation we do not try to quiet the mind but to pay
attention to what it is in the body that wants our attention. Our body and minds become flooded with alive active energy yet still with a deepening energy and awareness. We do not still the mind to know bliss, bliss is our heightened awareness and our evolving intimacy with our body and life in and around us. slowly the subtle moves to the dense. Most of
us have not been taught to pay attention to the sensations in the body
and our body is desperate for our attention.

    3. I used to think I knew a lot but since doing this I realize
how little I truly know. And knowing not believing or thinking is
what I want. Body meditation is a very simple process and my knowing increases. One pays
attention to the predominant physical sensation in the body. That
includes feelings mundane and sublime, both horrid and estatic, of all kinds, seeing colors or images evolving dream scapes of any kinds , and hearing both the voices of the so called devil, ordinary voices and wisdom voices. all without control. Do we dare? are does the “devil” need to be controlled.
words. The process is simple but not easy because the awareness is
placed in the body and just follows what is there. It brings up all
the parts of us that we have hidden. The nice part is that things are
brought up in a safe way. because we do not push, the process is always safe. My goal in this work is to provide an
environment where one may feel comfortable and safe to explore all

her predominant physical sensation. Once this has been found and
communicated to me I ask the person to keep his/her attention on the
sensation until it changes. The predominant physical sensation may be
an itch, a pain, an emotion, a feeling of expansion, relaxation – what
ever draws ones attention. As we proceed through the session I ask
the person to communicate to me when something changes. I ask him/her

I now own at least 10 sock caps! I’m back on a running streak. Started back a few days after surgery and my release from the hospital. My Grand Mal seizures ended 27 plus years of running every day. Oh well, my goal is another 27 years. Keep the faith, I stole one of my buddy’s (he went thru the same thing many years ago) books. It is a must read,” Anti cancer A NEW WAY OF LIFE”.
I love your attitude, you do have a battle ahead of you and I wish you the best.
I’m having another follow up MRI tomorrow :-).

Loren, you can get through this! I have a friend who had brain cancer and swears by raw juice… pulp and all. You sound like you are doing it right and I am sure you are getting all kinds of advice. I just know that combining the eastern and western methods do work. Take care of your body and feed it living food! Do you know of OHI, Optimum Health Institute in Lemon Grove. It’s all about wheat grass. I am thinking of you and will send good, positive healthy vibes your way! Heather Salter, San Diego Locations (just in case you didn’t know, just one of your many FB friends)

  36. I am a local girl that went to grade school with your wife and that has seen you around my neighborhood for years, and even waited on you in a local resturant. You have been watched on the news by my family on different channels, at different times of day and on different subjects. I think of you as “my” news guy and always will. Thanks to you and best wishes for a speedee and complete recovery.

Dearest Loren; attitude is everything. My son beat leukemia with a great attitude. That is not to say that he (and the rest of us) did not have bad days. He also had support from unexpected people and places. Keep on keeping on and know that this city loves and supports your battle.

  43. You have a great attitude about everything. I love your blogs. And I can’t wait to see your “Badass” villain scar 🙂 You are certainly deserving of all this outpouring of support and love. Keep smiling and we will send our energy and love to help.

Loren, I work with a man who had brain cancer, they performed surgery, he’s been thru it all, it cost him his left eye, and he’s still with us 8 years later, I have full faith in your inner power, your approach to everything from what I have come to know of you having been a faithful fan since forever is the best approach to such a battle. My prayers are with you.

    Hi Loren,
The docs words . . “to live”. Your schedule not theirs. So excited for you and the lovely Suzie to travel, hit that bucket list and then start a new list. This bites but aren’t you already amazed by how the truly important things become so very clear. The positive juju coming your way from so many is enough to kick the shit out of this. Holding you and your beautiful family close in my intentions for peace and healing.
    Love you and Suzie,
    Mo

Wow, you are MUCH LOVED! I think I would turn a deaf ear to those guys giving length of years, since we all know that Jesus is the Great Healer. Do you have any idea how many days of our lives you have brightened, with your witty, caring, and compassionate way of presenting the news? I’ve always treasured your upbeat, cheerful attitude, and have often sought out the channel where you would be. What a shock it must have been to learn about the challenges you are now facing. Please know that the energy and prayers of all your followers are on your side, rooting for you to be successful in beating this. I hope that you and your wife can really enjoy your travels. God bless and sending you the best!

Loren, I am an aspiring RN (half way through nursing school) and a firm believer in Western Medicine. However, I am also very familiar with the Tibetan Healing Center, and I truly believe you are in good hands with Lobsang! He is a wonderful and caring human being, not to mention his wealth of knowledge and experience with combining modern Western medicine and ancient Tibetan medicine and healing practices. I have watched you in San Diego since my childhood and I intend for my children to grow up with you as well! Looking forward to seeing you back on the air!
