The pathology results are in for the fluid in Dad’s brain…

There was a chance that the fluid was either (in order from best to worst news) dead/dying cancer cells, goo from the trauma of surgery (and/or hitting his head multiple times since), or new cancer cells forming.

—drumroll please—

JUST GOO!

HOORAY!  And a follow up MRI, 24 hours after surgery, revealed that it had not returned. Mom said she felt like driving down the street, windows open, yelling “THERE’S NO FLUID!!”

Mom had been {glam}camping in the new R.V. outside the hospital all week (with a german shepherd and two pomeranians in tow), and she was ready and waiting in her hospital-front campsite when Dad was sprung from his much bigger room at Scripps on Saturday morning (4/20/13).

From the hospital, he and Mom went where all people go after brain surgery———Nordstrom’s (of course)! Dad even attended a housewarming party that same day, where Graham played guitar and we all celebrated the latest good news.

On Sunday, Mom and Dad headed out for their first R.V. road trip! Their tentative plan is to drive up the coast toward wine country. I’ll post updates as I receive them.

Hannah

Oh—In case you were wondering how things went when Dad read (on his own blog no less) that I’d crashed his car on the way to the hospital; Here’s the text I received from him on Friday morning (the day after the accident and subsequent blog post, where I slyly revealed it to Dad):

Hannah Jane Nancarrow is a San Diego State University alumni, with a B.A. in journalism and new media. After graduating in 2011, Hannah worked in local T.V. news before her dad was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Hannah managed and contributed to her dad’s incredibly popular blog (thenancarrowproject.com) and social media platforms before he passed away, after 11 months of bravely battling and blogging. The diagnosis was a catalyst for her own writing and for following each whim and dream. Today, Hannah writes her own blog and has been a keynote speaker at San Diego Women's Week, Relay for Life, and a top fundraiser for cancer-related causes throughout San Diego. Hannah also has a passion for health and fitness, since losing 75 pounds in 2011. She earned her Spinning® and group fitness instructor certifications, and teaches weekly cycle classes in Encinitas, California. Hannah also earned her real estate license and works in the family business, Nancarrow Realty Group, in North County San Diego.

Wishing you and your family well means just that; wishing you and your family well always.
Happy and safe trip. (I am puzzled, what the heck do you buy at Nordstrom to go camping in a motor home?)

I am so happy for Loren and your family, such wonderful news. I first saw Loren on the news when I moved to San Diego some 20years+ ago. Really liked his style,; he definitely has charm and appeal. Then at Street Scene I saw him reporting. I think I had a little crush on him. I followed his garden tips and was thankful to have someone reporting ideas that people could actually use instead of the usual gloom and doom. Years later when he had disappeared from channel ? I almost literally ran into him at “The Third Corner” and discovered he had moved to channel 5. I was so happy to tune in again and see his happy face and the wit and charm that went with it, and I’m sure I will see him again soon I hope.

My very best to you Hannah, Your Super Dad and incredible supportive family,

    A stranger and admirer,

    Vanessa Bill

  4. Again, and again, and some more agains, we are so touched and feel so privilege that you and your family continue to include us (Blog followers, concerned San Diegans, lovers of the fight) in your families journey with this heroic fight of your Dads…As I read today’s post I found myself holding my breath as I continued to read the outcome of this last surgery. So happy with the good news, and feeling blessed that prayers are being heard and answered. Continueing to hold you all in our family prayers and look forward to hearing about your parents Northern adventure. Great that they get this time together while your Dad heals…

Loved seeing the texts to see how your dad responded to the car. 🙂 You’re a lucky daughter to have such a loving father, and he is a lucky man to have such a loving daughter as well. Hooray for Goo!! 🙂

  6. Hershell says:

First of all, congratulations on the good news! Every day is precious and as I have gotten older I have recognized this more than ever before. Like Loren, I try to stay closer to my three children each day. Cars can easily be fixed and your dad was just happy that you were not hurt. When I think of Loren and Suzie’s trip up to the wine country, I want to remind tbem to take along the movie Sideways as a guide and many good laughs. Forget the rest of the world and nust have fun for a few dsys! If you make up to Calistoga, be sure to take a mud bath at Golden Haven, an unforgettable experience! Have fun, but don’t drink any of that f…ing Merlot!

I cannot help but follow this blog because we are in the same situation with my husband and brain cancer. You both say things that I don’t often get to express out loud, but I do feel that you are saying exactly what I am thinking and feeling. My heart is with your whole family and I hope that the RV trip is fabulous in every way.

WHEW!! OH, WHAT A RELIEF IT IS!! So happy to hear the “goo is gone”!! Don’t know how far north you are going but the steam engine train ride out of Santa Cruz, up into the giant redwoods, is worth the day trip….. Can have lunch there and ride the train back to Santa Cruz……I love those trees……. Also the Highway 1 drive, even though it is very scary, at times, it is breathtaking……..Happy Trails!!
