The Waiting Room Written By: Susie Nancarrow

Two wheelchairs, 1 male and 1 female, 60 something. One metal walker, female, 30 something. Two canes, 2 males, 60 something. The faces deep and resolute.

The caregivers eyes blank and clear as if looking through a lens with no filter.

All walks, all races, all neurological.

Loren asks if we ‘do nothing’ would he continue to get more tired and just fall deep into sleep eventually? I whisper “I think so” we’re in the waiting room.

  26. Been a So-Cal transplant 10 years. Often wished that Loren would become the Weather man Extraordinaire up here…like, what he was for me while I raised my daughter in Julian, CA. Our weather patterns have become unusual and even bizarre recently and I just know that Loren would have a sensible explanation for it all. A Tornado two weeks ago a few miles away, some ground damage, Boeing plant had parts of their roof torn away, a car lifted and moved, no one injured(Parkland, WA)… amazing rainfall end of September, and now one of the mildest but driest Octobers on record. Love all the weather changes here on Southern part of the Puget Sound. Puyallup, pronounced Pull Ya All Up (Joking really) “Pue-al- up”, has the richest soil, attributed to the volcanic run-off of rich top soils, but the big Puyallup river used to cover this valley until a levee was built to keep it under control. The Puyallup native American peoples still control the Salmon fishing rights. And I love being here. Their name is translated “a generous people”. said to be because visiting tribal people would be given piles of goods to set them on their way safely and well provided for. These people are still a very kind and generous people to those of us who have taken it upon ourselves to be their friends. Loren, you would fit right in, Miss You and want the God of all people to heal you and set you o your way, well provided for. You hear, In Jesus Name God Bless You.

  28. ags4 says:

I was devastated to hear of Loren’s cancer diagnosis.

An Encinitas resident for over 25 years, Loren feels like a neighbor and friend. I’ve seen him at restaurants around town, on the beach filming for his newscast. My husband loved his gardening segments. We watched him every night. My husband died of a sudden heart attack in 2007 at age 51. We had enjoyed our favorite sushi restaurant in Solana Beach with our daughter and boyfriend on December 27. He died that night.

I have been following your blog and my heart breaks for you… I am inspired by you all… and I appreciate my life more because of you.

Thank you for sharing what you are going through. I send my love to you, Loren, and your family.

  29. Cherie says:

Many, many thoughts and that many more prayers are with Loren, you and the whole family today…

    Loren, Susie and family,
I’m so touched by your blogs as I am going through the same with my sister. Quite simply – brain cancer sucks. She’s in ICU right now after a bad fall at home and other complications. She’s not only my sister, she’s my best friend so it’s been tough watching her go through her journey. Loren and I have known each other through the media and I appreciate his blogs and his sharing as well as all of your thoughts. I’m also so pleased at the strong bonds you have as a family and I know Loren is blessed to have that. My best to you all.

  31. Pat Gaffey says:

    Loren & Susie & Family,
May your human loves, friendships and elements of the kingdoms (plant, animal, mineral, ocean, others) continue to give you warmth and comfort. Sending blessings and positive juju from New England, Pat Gaffey

  32. Debbie Abel says:

    Susie,

We’ve not met, although we almost did at the SDBTF 5K. I am Ted Abel’s wife, a 25 year survivor, and we’ve spent the last week in the ICU for a brain bleed that may have been caused by his chemo, his tumor, or both. I would like to extend my hand, shoulder, ear, whatever you may need, to talk with someone who knows this journey and who takes it with you. Let me know if I can help. My personal e-mail is contained here. If not, Connie or Sara can give it to you.

  33. Mary Ann says:

To the Nancarrow family – prayers for peace for you on this journey.

  34. Nenette West says:

I am so sorry with what you have to endure as a family. Let us still hope for the best. I’ve done my share of enduring the wait in those rooms and there is no other word to describe it but ‘SUCKS’. We continue to pray for all of you so please hang in there. It is not easy I know, but continue to lean on each other as you’ve always had and the journey will be easier. Loren, if I could just wave a magic wand and make you well, I would have done so a long time ago, because I truly miss you on TV. Your prayer warriors are all rooting and praying for you. God is with all of us on this journey of yours. My love and hugs to all of you as I wish all of you well!

  35. Andrew says:

Loren is one of those unaffected people who feel like a member of the family. Still, I was a stranger to him on Election Day 2012 when he struck up a friendly conversation with me in the parking lot of a medical office building across the street from Scripps Encinitas. He asked what happened to the weather as it had suddenly gotten cold from a heavy marine later. I thought, but did not say “You tell me–you’re the expert.” Better not to acknowledge celebrity, and treat people as people. How could I know that moment of cold air and warm smiles was foreshadowing? Wishing peace and comfort to Loren, Suzie, family and friends.

  36. Anonymous says:

Loren has a legacy here in San Diego and all over. One of his tricks that I learned from him years ago that I have been using and promoting is his Christmas tree mixture There is nothing like it! God bless.

  37. Anonymous says:

Wow! What an amazing real sharing. Being in the field of hospice I admire all you are sharing and all you are going through. My prayers and thoughts are with you all…..there is no right answer in this situation…..god bless!

  38. Jim Pilling says:

Susie, thanks for sharing. Hospital waiting rooms can be depressing. The fear of the unknown diagnosis and uncertainty. My thoughts and prayers come from Eugene, Oregon to your family and tell Loren to keep smiling as I remember him from watching him over the airwaves when I lived in San Diego. My new garden up here is flourishing because of his ideas.
    Jim Pilling

  39. You’re in a sacred space and time. Having been there myself not so long ago with my young husband I think I might know some of what you’re going through. There will be so much you’ll remember later that your mind and heart is compartmentalizing for you right now. Trust in that. For now, tell stories, look at old photos, draw near to each other and feel everything together. All tears are sacred. Bless you and bless you.

  40. What can we say except we send our love and prayers to the whole family.

    Hugs Pat and Oscar

  41. connie990 says:

Suzie, I’m so sad you’re all going through this tough time and so grateful you are sharing this journey for all of us who will experience our own waiting room. I’m ever hopeful that Loren’s wait will result in a miraculous cure; so many of your followers have reported that occurring for them. As I continue to hold Loren and his family in healing prayer, filled with love and light, I want to extend that love and prayer to others who might be in the waiting room without the support system that your family has. Your family posts have increased the love and compassion of so many of us and your family’s contributions have definitely made the world a better place. You are such good people and you bring out the goodness in others. Thank you so much.
